Movement and Stillness: The Yin & Yang of Yoga

Whether you prefer a more invigorating, energetic practice or a quiet, relaxed practice, we all need both for balance.

The union of yoga comes from addressing the intrinsic connection between opposites, and honoring these differences to create balance.  Similar to hot & cold, solar & lunar, and black & white, we have yin & yang asana practices.  The yang practice demands muscular and integrative energy to support the joints, while the yin practice invites us to completely relax our muscles in order to address the soft tissue.

In this workshop we will explore the physiology and techniques of both practices through pranayama (breathing) and asana (postures).  Energizing pranayama and an active practice will be followed by a relaxing yin practice including restorative and calming pranayama exercises.  You will depart not only feeling more centered, but armed with the tools to bring balance to each moment of your life!

Appropriate for all levels – modifications and refinements provided.

ACROYOGA FUNdamentals

Open your practice with the ease, comfort and the support of a partner. Grounded in the breath, we will draw upon the natural force of gravity to overcome fear and release tension.

PARTNER CONDITIONING & STRETCHING
For fitness buffs who want more flexibility and Yogis who want more strength. Powerful asana flow warms the body and builds core awareness and strength. Partner Stretching uses gravity, resistance and breath awareness to achieve the maximum range of flexibility.

INVERT, INVOLVE, EMPOWER
After solidifying spotting techniques, we will progress to basic partner acrobatics, cultivating trust, strength and flexibility while working as a team. A playful, safe, supportive environment will empower the whole room to be upside down! No inversion experience needed.

FLIGHT
The base is the partner that creates a stable platform for the flyer to explore inverted aerial asana flows. The flyer receives anti-gravitational spinal decompression and muscular release while the base is the recipient of Thai Massage.

BACKBENDS:

Shining the light of safety, comfort and freedom on the dark side.

News flash yogis!  Backbends are not only supposed to feel good, but are also incredibly therapeutic!  Many of us experience limitation and pain during backbends, which leads us to believe we are not “backbenders”, thus steering clear from these potentially liberating poses.  As a category of pose, backbends can be the most challenging because we spend so much time focused on the front body.  Misalignments are abundant and create barricades and disconnect on an anatomical and physiological level.  Come learn proper alignment and approach so that you can bring some light to your own healing and explore the invigorating energy and freedom of backbends.

You will learnn:

Optimal alignment

 How to avoid common misalignments

Proper warm-ups to yield the most space, comfort and success in the pose

Learn new, fun and freeing backbends!

**Appropriate for all levels.**

A Teachers Talk, Practice Class and Group Discussion.

With Wendy Sadler and Wendy Dahl

This practice class is designed for teachers, aspiring teachers, and those considering teacher training.  We will begin with a 2 hour intermediate/advanced asana practice lending an opportunity to explore, discuss, support and adjust one another in poses that are often misunderstood and/or teachers are nervous to offer.  Following, we will continue the discussion covering whatever questions, comments or experiences come up including refining demonstrations, active cueing, effective adjustments, the business of yoga, teaching in studios vs. health clubs, private instruction, the current climate of yoga….whatever seems relevant in the yoga world.  This is a wonderful opportunity to network and support each other as well as stay active in community.  Feel free to bring snacks to share during the discussion and email us with questions and/or poses we can address in class!

Relax, Restore, and Rejuvenate: A Restorative Yoga Workshop

Just as our bodies need to be exercised in order to be fit and healthy, they also need to have time to rest and repair. Most of us could be called “human-doings”, as opposed to human “beings”. Discover the counterpoint to a busy lifestyle of doing, and connect with a deep state of presence and consciousness, a state of being.

As human beings we are naturally self-healing and self-regulating, if we allow our bodies time and space to work their magic. Discover the miracle of deep relaxation by opening the body, releasing tension and stress, and connecting with the space of tranquility and peace that resides inside.

During this restorative yoga practice, you will lie completely relaxed supported with blocks, blankets and bolsters which are used to position the body. The deep relaxation that restorative yoga invites triggers theparasympathetic nervous system, which helps to lower heart rate and blood pressure. It will also stimulate the immune system and ensures the healthy operation of the endocrine system, bringing the body into balance.
Other benefits may include:

  • Improved posture
  • Relief from back pain
  • Relief from physical exhaustion and fatigue
  • Relief from chronic stress-related conditions (such as insomnia, fatigue, headaches, digestive problems, etc.)
  • Better resistance to injury
  • Improved range of motion
  • Release of lactic acid and other toxins from areas of accumulation
  • Improved circulation, metabolism and immunity
  • Lower cholesterol levels
  • Greater sense of “calm focus”
  • A lessening of dependence on medication

Redefining Balance Workshop with Kendra & Wendy

Redefining Balance, is an exploration into the core center of the body, the source of balance on and off the yoga mat. You will delve into your core and build strength as well as awareness. This workshop will link together vinyasa yoga, AcroYoga and Slackline Yoga (where balance is relative to what you are practicing on). AcroYoga uses the therapeutics of Thai massage alongside the strength and power of acrobatics. You will learn how to base, fly, and spot each other safely in yoga poses that transition the flyer through the air on the feet and hands of a partner. You will also learn the practice of “slackasana,” yoga poses on a slackline (a one-inch thick piece of tubular webbing, tied between two fixed points that creates something between a tightrope and a trampoline). Ultimately, you will discover that balance is the result of energy, focus, and the ability to connect to everything that surrounds you.

.................................................................................................................

Core Conditioning

AcroYoga and Slackasana Play and Train with Kendra Charts and Wendy Dahl

This workshop will allow you to  build a strong conditioning sequence that supports Acro and Slackasana training.  We will begin with the AcroYoga asana sequence which is a comprehensive, dynamic and energizing flow that incorporates strength-building elements which inform the practice of hand balances and inversions.  The emphasis is on building skill-specific strength to apply to your Slackasana (yoga on a slackline, a piece of climbing webbing stretched taught  between two fixed points) and AcroYoga practice, deepening your sense of balance and mental focus.  The class will culminate in Acro transitions to put your strength drills to the test!  You will get stronger and feel more confident and comfortable balancing on your hands, even upside down!

Allow the wisdom of the acrobats to bring more lightness and flight to your yoga practice!  All levels are welcome.
