~ Your Daily Meds~

The theme for this week, and the 3rd principle of harmony is ~Firmness and Gentleness~.  Real firmness is always gentle.  Real gentleness is always firm.  When we are present we naturally manifest firmness and gentleness simultaneously.

This is the intrinsic unity within apparent opposites.  Similar to yin and yang, solar and lunar, hot and cold, dark and light, one and infinity, stability and freedom, integration and expansion, firmness and gentleness, we cannot have one without the other.  They balance each other bringing the one into infinity and the infinity into One.

When we try to pick out anything  by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe. ~ John Muir

Mantra: Balance and unity.

 Pranayama: Nadi Shodhana (described below**)

Meditation: The Mountain Meditation and The Lake Meditation.  There are nice versions of theses meditations in Jon Kabat Zinn’s book Wherever Yoga Go, There You Are.  It may also be enjoyable and helpful to sit or lay in an open setting with a lake and / or mountain in view.  However, a guided meditation and outdoor scenery are not necessary as it is the inner experience that is important here.

For both, imagine a lake or mountain of any dimension or size, located any place in the world.  It can be a place you have been or one you imagine.  Visualize this area at different times of day, varying seasons, and during a range of weather patterns.  The mountain meditation can be used to evoke feelings of solidarity, centeredness, stability and impermanence.  No matter what the external conditions hold, the mountain stays the same, a grounded and centered presence.  The lake meditation invites us to hold all of our thoughts, feelings and sensations in awareness, just as a body of water asks to be contained.  Can we see the fluctuating seasons and weather patterns on the surface of the lake similar to our physical and emotional fluctuations; ultimately identifying with the stillness that always resides at depth.

**Nadi Shodhana is translated as Alternate Nostril Breath in English.  One nostril is generally dominant over the other, and this dominance can change regularly.  Just as one side of the brain is associated with certain traits, characteristics and qualities, breathing predominantly out of one side also holds certain energies.  In general, right nostril dominance is associated with more solar and energetic energies, whereas left nostril breathing is linked with more receptive and lunar energies.  There is a lot of material from yogic philosophy to scientific research linking emotional and physical balances (and imbalances) with breathing.  So I could go on and on…..but this method is about creating balance between the  nostrils, the hemispheres of the brain, our emotions, as well as the connection between physicality and essence.

Blue Sun Yoga Teacher Training Practice Suggestions:

Yama: Brahmacharya : Balanced energy.

Sutra: find the sutras on the 8-limbs in Naschala's book, Satchidananda's and any other materials you may have.  Read and reflect on their interpretations of the Yamas.

Asana: Continue to practice mini-vinyasas.  Come up with a few on your own – keep it simple!  Remember, the idea is to give your students a few poses that you guide them through, then let them breath with it on their own pace.  Simplicity is better as it is easier to remember.

Simple postures, advanced awareness.

Complex things are easy to achieve, simplicity is the real challenge.  Let’s practice!!
